Mark V. Afable

Afable is a consultant for several insurance related entities including American Family Mutual Insurance Company, the American Property and Casualty Insurance Association, LexisNexis Risk Solutions, and other insurance trade associations. 

Prior to becoming a consultant, Afable served as Commissioner of Insurance for the State of Wisconsin from January of 2019 through December of 2021. Afable served as the state’s chief regulator of insurance and oversaw the operations of the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance. He was also chair of the Injured Patients and Families Compensation Fund Board of Governors and a member of Wisconsin Security Fund Board. At the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, Afable was very involved in Big Data and AI issues, serving  on the Innovation and Technology Committee and also served as vice-chair of the Big Data/AI Working Group and chaired the Accelerated Underwriting Working Group.

A graduate of Marquette University Law School, Afable has many years of experience in the insurance industry. Prior to his appointment, he served as the chief legal officer for American Family Insurance.  He advised senior leadership and the board of directors on legal matters involving corporate governance, compliance issues, and regulatory actions. Prior to becoming CLO, Afable was an executive vice president overseeing Claims and Sales and Service.  Earlier in his career, he worked for Allstate Insurance Company as an attorney and was counsel for the National Association of Independent Insurers (NAII) in Des Plaines, Illinois.

Commissioner Afable previously served on the Board of Directors for Sunshine Place, a resource facility for charitable organizations providing food, clothing, and social services to residents of Sun Prairie. He also served on the American Family Children's Hospital Advisory Board and the Edgewood High School Board of Trustees. Afable also loves to cook for family and friends, and especially enjoys using his grill and smoker whenever he can.
